INTERACTIVE FORM 1023

  Print Version

Ben Borchers, CPA – Senior Accountant

The IRS has unveiled an alternate version of the Form 1023, Application for Recognition of Exemption Under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, in an effort to ease the process of applying for tax exemption. This new form is a result of recommendations from the Advisory Committee on Tax-Exempt and Government Entities. Even though the substance of the new Interactive Form 1023-I remains unchanged from Form 1023, there are several anticipated benefits associated with the release of the new interactive form.

  1. Ease of Completion - The interactive form features pop-up explanations, examples, and links to IRS publications regarding each line item of the form.
  2. Shortened Application – Included with the form is a "Top Ten Tips" designed to decrease time associated with the application process.
  3. Submission – Applicants will be able to submit a more complete and accurate form.
  4. Improved Processing – Total processing time by the IRS should be reduced.
  5. Timely Receipt – The tax-exempt determination is anticipated to be a faster turnaround.

The IRS is asking for comments on the related form as part of its continuing effort to reduce paperwork and gain efficiencies associated with the process. Feedback will be accepted if submitted by December 2, 2013 to Yvette Lawrence of the IRS. If interested in providing feedback, please send comments to the address shown below.
